Talking Points

The Illinois Stewardship Alliance informed us of the following.

IMMEDIATE ACTION TO TAKE:

Submit "Witness Slip" supporting Amendment #1 to HB 2690.

Amendment # 1 to House Bill 2690 (HB 2690) would clarify the law and make clear that on-farm, direct-to-consumer sales are legal in Illinois without the unnecessary and onerous rules IDPH has proposed. This would also help with the effort to fight IDPH's proposed rules.

As many of you know, last year the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) proposed new rules and regulations for small farms producing and selling raw milk. After 30 years of allowing on-farm, direct-to-consumer sales of raw milk, provided the consumer brought their own container and the farms didn't actively advertise it, IDPH did an about face and said that it was actually illegal and had been for 30 years unless they drafted specific rules and regulations for it--rules that are very onerous. But all is not lost; thanks to Illinois Representative Peter Breen, we have an opportunity to push back and clarify the law.

Protect consumer access to raw milk in Illinois and submit a witness slip to show your support of Amendment #1 to HB 2690, then follow up with phone calls and emails via the email petition.
