Gov. Walker, "I'll Sign Raw Milk Bill With Safeguards"

Governor Scott Walker says he would sign a bill to let farmers sell raw milk – as long as it has safeguards to protect public health and the integrity of the dairy industry.

The Republican Walker made the comment Thursday, after several lawmakers said they would bring back a bill that was vetoed last year by former Governor Jim Doyle. Assembly Democrat Chris Danou of Trempealeau sponsored the original measure.

Raw milk issue could resurface in Legislature

Another attempt to legalize the sale of raw, unpasteurized milk to Wisconsin consumers is coming before the Legislature and a new governor who says he would support it.

Thursday, several key lawmakers said they favored reviving a raw milk bill that was vetoed in 2010 by former Gov. Jim Doyle.

Judge dismisses charges against Laclede County farmer in raw milk case

A Greene County judge has dismissed charges against a Laclede County farmer charged with operating a food establishment without a permit by selling raw milk in the Springfield city limits.

Armand Bechard told the News-Leader he originally lost the case in municipal court over the summer when he was represented by a public defender.

There was an article in the Washington Post a few days ago saying that the new food safety legislation passed by Congress last month and just signed into law could well not be funded enough to allow the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to enforce its provisions. The implication was that the legislation could well be irrelevant.

I found myself wondering: Why would Congress go through all the fancy footwork of votes and re-votes, and legislative deals (we still don't know what kind of benefits the legislation's key Senate opponent, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, received in return for changing his mind at the last minute to support the legislation) if Congress wasn't going to fund the legislation. Seems strange.

USDA Poised to Approve Genetically Engineered Alfalfa

Ring the Frankenfood alarm. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is on the verge of approving Monsanto's genetically engineered (GE), Roundup Ready alfalfa for the spring planting season.

According to Food & Water Watch, the USDA released its environmental impact assessment on GE alfalfa on December 16, 2010. This is one of the very last stages in the approval process for genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Unless we raise a huge ruckus right now, you can bet that Big Ag will be sowing its GE alfalfa seeds this coming spring.
