Many of us are enjoying our backyard gardens right now. As humans that eat, we have the right to grow our own food, but some zoning boards didn't get that memo!
It's hard to believe, but in Michigan, even backyard gardens are under attack! Yes, you, too may need a backyard garden attorney! FTCLDF is happy to help.
We don't like this idea of regulators making pests of themselves. Now the word is out:
"Don't mess with our backyard gardens!"
"Hands off our compost-grown heritage tomatoes!"
FTCLDF is able to protect backyard gardens only as a result of our community's investment in food freedom through donations and membership fees.
Each state's Right to Farm law is different, and FTCLDF is working to make sure that every available protection is respected.
Without FTCLDF we would never have been able to handle a defense against our township in our right-to-farm case. While it's not even close to over yet, Gary Cox is a pit bull and we have every confidence that our case will be won and our 5 allergic children will get to keep their pets and sources of safe, allergen-free foods like raw goat milk and soy-free/corn-free eggs.
The right to farm--to grow and raise food for yourself, your family and your community--is regulated by state and local laws. The intent of this regulation should be to prevent harm to neighbors and/or the environment. Instead, zoning barriers pose a challenge to farmers all over the country, but there are potential solutions.
Michigan has the best Right to Farm Act in the country, allowing farming in urban and suburban areas no matter what the local zoning regulations. Yet, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is trying to circumvent the Right to Farm Act by changing its meaning through policy changes engineered by unelected bureaucrats.
Since the Buchler case, FTCLDF has been receiving more calls from people trying to feed their families as well as the local community and are being cited for violating local ordinances and threatened with fines. MDARD needs to be stopped.
We need to protect the neighborhood farm and its ability to feed the community.
Every year we carefully select the most recent media as a thank-you to our food rights community members who provide donations. Each of these gifts forwards either the notion of sustainable farming and/or cooking or preparing foods from those sustainable farms.
We hope you enjoy this year's selection of donor gifts:
We are grateful for the financial support garnered during our annual appeal and are pleased to be able to offer donor gifts in appreciation of donations of $100 or more.
To receive one of these gifts, donate $100 or more by August 8, 2014.
