Dan Brown Hearing in Maine Food Sovereignty Case: Judge Finds
Raw Milk Not a 'Local Food'

On April 23rd, the Hancock County Superior Court heard oral argument on whether Dan Brown should be awarded summary judgment in his favor in an action brought against him by the Maine Department of Agriculture. FTCLDF General Counsel Gary Cox and his Ellsworth, Maine co-counsel Sandy Collier argued the case of Mr. Brown. Surprisingly, the judge rendered her decision within a week of the hearing. Canada: Shropshire Sheep Case

Michael Schmidt and Montana Jones face substantial jail time for allegedly violating a quarantine order on sheep that were no threat to the public health. Here is an account of the case.

Shepherdess Montana Jones began accumulating her flock of rare Shropshire sheep in 2000. Once an extremely popular breed due to their high productivity, their hardiness, and their ability to thrive on grass, Shropshires had become progressively more rare in Canada as grain-feeding became the norm. Federal Action Alert Updates
FDA choco milk labeling
Reminder to submit comments by May 21, 2013

Proposed FDA dairy product labeling change
The dairy industry has petitioned the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve the inclusion of chemical sweeteners (e.g., aspartame) as part of the 'standard of identity' for milk and 17 other dairy products, including yogurt, eggnog and cream.

If these dairy items are used as ingredients in other foods, the label will simply state "milk" or "cream", etc., without mention of the additives.

Read FDA's questions for comments.

See the FDA Consumer Update which attempts to explain the petition request but fails to address concerns about second generation products (i.e., foods containing any of the 18 dairy products as an ingredient).

Comment period for Docket ID FDA-2011-N-0899 ended April 26, 2013

AquaBounty claims that salmon grown from its genetically engineered (GE) salmon eggs is biologically and nutritionally the same as other Atlantic salmon. Comments on the "Draft Environmental Assessment and Preliminary Finding of No Significant Impact For a Genetically Engineered Atlantic Salmon; Availability" closed April 26 but not before letters of opposition from members of the U.S. Congress were submitted.
