Massachusetts Filmmaker Brings Her Widely Acclaimed Film Home
Falls Church, Virginia (September 2, 2011)--Boston, the heart of the early American revolutionary spirit, is soon to be known as the birthplace of a new American revolt against government tyranny. There is no tea party this time, rather a teat party, as raw milk proponents and Jersey cows stand up against armed federal agents trying to stem the flow of folks going away from retail stores and toward local farms. Last year, the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture not only tried to make milk delivery and carpools from farm-to-consumer illegal, the officials went after a one-cow dairy and interfered with a cowshare agreement between the farmer and two shareholders.
It was these over-the-top civil rights infringements that led an upset mother to hire a film crew and travel the country. Kristin Canty left her husband and four children at home in Concord, and captured the plight of many farm families in her shocking new documentary, Farmageddon--The War on American Family Farms opens Friday, September 16 and plays through Thursday, September 22nd at the AMC Boston Common 19 located at 175 Tremont Street. Filmmaker, Kristin Canty depicts the struggles of an emerging farm economy, made up of farmers who are returning to traditional, non-industrial farming methods, the kind that existed a plenty at the turn of the century, yet have nearly vanished.
A first time filmmaker, Kristin is a Massachusetts mom whose 4-year-old son was healed of multiple allergies by adding farm fresh (raw) milk to his diet. Since she achieved remarkable results from working with a local farmer to heal her boy, she was alarmed to discover the FDA agenda to restrict access to this wholesome food.
Farmageddon tells stories of numerous trespasses by health bureaucrats on farmers’ and consumers’ civil liberties. Canty also interviews consumers, chefs and nutrition experts who greatly desire to support the new economic model by direct sourcing of food grown without the use of chemicals, hormones and pesticides.
The film was inspired by the work of Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund, which defends the rights of small sustainable farms to sell farm products direct to consumers, against government interference. Kristin Canty is a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF), a nutrition education and activist group, as well as the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF).
